Celine Bousquet (16)
the cosmos
she once told me she was obsessed with space, so i became infatuated with the stars above too.
neb•u•la /ˈnebyələ/ (n): the way her fingers feel against my cold, numb skin; a hazy recollection
of her smile amidst the frightful thoughts. alternatively: harsh words never to be spoken again;
an accidental slap to the face; “i don't love you anymore.”
(a cloud of gas and dust in outer space, visible in the night sky either as an indistinct bright patch
or as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter.)
cos·mos /ˈkäzməs,ˈkäzˌmōs,ˈkäzˌmäs/ (n): the feeling i get when her arms are around me and
everything is alright again; a time where my heart was in pieces and she took some of her own to
put it back together again.
(the universe seen as a well-ordered whole.)
no·va /ˈnōvə/ (n): times where i’d hit fifty days and relapse; thoughts that creep in and say, “you
see this girl you're holding? she's not going to be yours forever.”
(a star showing a sudden large increase in brightness and then slowly returning to its original
state over a few months.)
su·per·no·va /ˌsōōpərˈnōvə/ (n): the happiness on her face when i proposed; “i love you too.”;
the first time i kissed her. alternatively: vomit induced by a call from the hospital; rage that
creeps in at the sight of him.
(a star that suddenly increases greatly in brightness because of a catastrophic explosion that
ejects most of its mass.)
dark mat•ter (n): “god loves you.”; “if he loves me, where is he? and why must he hate me so?”
alternatively: sprinting from streetlight to streetlight to outrun the nightmares; the feeling i get
when i see her and my heart starts racing.
(in some cosmological theories: non-luminous material that is postulated to exist in space and
that could take any of several forms including weakly interacting particles (cold dark matter) or
high-energy randomly moving particles created soon after the Big Bang (hot dark matter).)
black hole /ˈˌblak ˈhōl/ (n): her.
(a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape.)
i see the way moonlight dances in her eyes and how stardust flows in her veins—she is not of this world.
Celine is an American poet primarily known for her space-themed pieces, and each of the poems are carefully researched to ensure their scientific accuracy. She has been writing for a few years now, and much to her girlfriend’s delight, her poetry has been successfully published before through a minor literary section. The parenthetical lines in this piece are actual definitions taken from the Oxford English Dictionary.
