Signe Blake (18)
U.$.A.
they offer a penny for your thoughts,
but you end up in debt
the second you put your two cents in.
I prefer not to speak, anymore,
because it costs money to be
opinionated, these days.
I can’t afford to use a voice
that isn’t cheap,
even though we pride ourselves on
FREEdom of speech.
I can’t speak for myself
because, if I do, it’s theft.
I’m stealing the rich man’s right
to put a price on my input,
to tax the mouth I run
if I cannot keep it shut.
I can’t make bank on the truth
because it’s all of a sudden
counterfeit, censored, and silenced.
I am the ninety nine percent.
Signe Blake is an eighteen-year-old poet from St. Paul, Minnesota who has been regularly writing poems since the age of twelve. Inspired by a local poet commissioned to do a writing workshop in her sixth grade English class, Signe has been striving to better herself as a writer and hopes to one day get a book published. In the fall of 2017, she will begin working on her English degree and aims to be teaching the subject within the next few years. Currently, her work is available to view for free on her Instagram page, @punkflowerchild. No other social media sites have been set up yet, but the future is promising.
